Camel [15 Álbuns]

HISTORIA

1. INICIOS

El origen de Camel fue concebido alrededor de 1964 cuando los hermanos Andrew e Ian Latimer se unieron a sus respectivos amigos Alan Butcher y Richard Over para formar "The Phantom Four", el cual rápidamente alcanzó notoriedad local debido a los numerosos conciertos que dieron en su ciudad natal de Guildford, en Inglaterra. La segunda guitarra de Graham Cooper pronto reemplazó a Richard Over y el nombre de la banda cambió a "Strange Brew". La banda principalmente ejecutaba covers hasta mediados de 1968 cuando Ian Latimer abandonó el grupo para casarse. Poco tiempo después Graham Cooper también dejó el grupo para casarse. Entonces Andrew Latimer y Alan Butcher publicaron un aviso en el "Surrey Advertiser" buscando bajista, aviso al cual Doug Ferguson respondió.
El 13 de Noviembre de 1968 Ferguson dejo impresionando al dúo con su confianza, un "solido" sonido de bajo, un excelente equipo (un Fender Jazz Bass, y 2 amplificadores Vox) y su propio técnico! Le ofrecieron el concierto en el instante. El nuevo trío, con orientación de blues, se llamó "The Brew". Poco tiempo después de unirse a "The Brew", Ferguson le contó a Latimer acerca de un excelente baterista que conocía. A pesar de no haber tocado su batería por más de 3 meses, este nuevo proyecto de percusión demostró lo que valía y el 15 de Enero de 1969, Andy Ward se unió a "The Brew" a la temprana edad de 14 años y el corazón de Camel empezó a tener forma. Ferguson pronto probó ser de gran valor con su talento para conseguir la atención sobre la banda y conciertos. Era también muy bueno en sonsacar los prometidos honorarios de los promotores, quienes frecuentemente protestaban no tener el dinero en la mano.
Como resultado, "The Brew" disfrutó de una serie ininterrumpida de conciertos y grabó su primer demo, "Crossroads" en el cual DJM Records pareció demostrar interés pero el trío se desalentó al saber que ese interés era solo como banda soporte para otro de sus artistas, Philip Goodhand-Tait. En 1971 grabaron un álbum con Goodhand-Tait llamado "I Think I'll Write A Song", pero el éxito fue mínimo y se deshicieron del trío. La experiencia, de todos modos, fue enriquecedora. Phil era teclista. Los tres músicos (Latimer, Ferguson y Ward) estuvieron de acuerdo en que un teclado ampliaría el sonido de la banda y enseguida publicaron un aviso en la Melody Maker. El 20 de Septiembre de 1971, Peter Bardens respondió con un extenso curriculum [Shotgun Express - Rod Stewart & Beryl Marsden; Them - Van Morrison; Peter B's Looners - Peter Green & Mick Fleetwood, solo para nombrar algunos] así como también dos discos solistas bajo su propio nombre. Los cuatro enseguida congeniaron. Bardens, quien había estado planeando dejar Inglaterra por lo que él creía eran "las prometedoras playas de USA", había previamente arreglado un par de conciertos en Irlanda. Así fue como el 8 de Octubre de 1971, la banda dio su primer concierto en Belfast con el nombre de "Peter Bardens On". "las sesiones comenzaban antes de la medianoche y terminaba a las seis de la mañana, paliábamos la fatiga con grandes sumas de bebidas y comidas" Peter Bardens 1969.
